Feltboard: Five Little Birds

Five little birds flying around my door
The orange one flew away, and then there were four

Four little birds sitting in a tree
The purple one flew away, and then there were three

Three little birds didn't know what to do
The red one flew away, and then there were two

Two little birds sitting in the sun
The green one flew away, and then there was one

One little bird sitting all alone
She flew away, and then there were none

But later on that day.... (bring back all the birds)

5 Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said "Oh My! it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The forth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun."
Whoooo went the wind,
Out went the lights,
And those five little pumpkins went rolling out of sight.

FELTBOARD: 10 Teddy Bears in aBed

“Ten Teddy Bears Sleeping in the Bed”
Ten little teddy bears sleeping in the bed,
Five at the foot and five at the head.
One little teddy said, “This bed is TOO full!”
So he grabbed the blanket and started to pull.
He pulled and he pulled and he pulled some more,
Until two little teddies went BOOM to the floor!
(Make pulling motions with PULL and clap with the BOOM)

(Count down until…)

One little teddy bear sleeping in the bed,
Zero at the foot and one at the head.
This little teddy said, “This is not right!
I don’t want to sleep alone tonight!”

So…
One little teddy bear sleeping in the bed,
Zero at the foot and one at the head.
This teddy said, “This bed is NOT full!”
So he put out his paw and started to pull.
He pulled and he pulled and he pulled some more,
Until four little teddies climbed up from the floor!

(Count up until…)

Ten little teddy bears sleeping in the bed,
Five at the foot and five at the head.
One little teddy said, “This is JUST right!”
So ten little teddy bears said, “Good Night!”

FELTBOARD: 3 Little Kittens

Three little kittens,
They lost their mittens,
And they began to cry,
Oh, mother dear,
We sadly fear
Our mittens we have lost.
What! Lost your mittens,
You naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie.
Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
You shall have no pie.

The three little kittens,
They found their mittens,
And they began to cry,
Oh, mother dear,
See here, see here,
Our mittens we have found.
What! Found your mittens,
You darling kittens!
Then you shall have some pie.
Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
You shall have some pie.

FELTBOARD: 5 Little Sloths

Five little sloths snoozing in the trees.
One lost his grip and bumped his knees
Mama said, “a tree’s no place to catch your zzzzz’s
Let’s find a cozy bed for my sloth babies.”

Repeat with four, three, two, and one.

All the little sloths have climbed down down from the trees
Each one has a cozy bed for catching zzz’s
Mama said sleep well if you please
I’ll see you in the morning my sweet babies

-original poem by Story Timing. So darn cute! I love that this is about sloths, something I am sure our story time kids are not familiar with (well most of them.) Thanks for sharing this great idea.

FELTBOARD: Eggs All Around

This is a cute Springtime feltboard story which gets the kids involved. You cover each animal with an egg and read just the first 2 lines of each verse and pull away the egg just a tiny bit to reveal a small portion of the animal. Once they have guessed the animal read the last line of the verse. Have the kids chant the chorus with you each time you say it.

Eggs in the treetops
Eggs on the ground
Eggs in the water
Eggs all around

Eggs, eggs, lots of eggs
Who's inside the little one begs

This one hatches, and
I see a smile
It's a toothy crocodile

Eggs, eggs, lots of eggs
Who's inside the little one begs

Heres an egg
Way in the back,
Out comes a baby duck,
Quack, quack, quack

Eggs, eggs, lots of eggs
Who's inside the little one begs

Inside this egg
Who does dwell?
A tiny turtle in it's shell

Eggs, eggs, lots of eggs
Who's inside the little one begs

Eggs in the water
Make a wish
When they pop open, there'll be a fish

Of all the eggs,
I like the best
The robin's eggs in her nest

* If you have a portion of a blue robins egg bring it in to share with the kids. Ask them if they have ever seen blue eggshells on the ground at their house or in the park.

FELTBOARD: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

This is a fun, well know story. I have a story apron version of this too, plus I also do a version where I am just using my body and storytelling. I have the kids help act out the story along with me. As the story goes on you repeat the same bits and the repetition makes it easy for most kids to learn on the spot.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wiggled and jiggles and tickled inside her
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird
How absurd she swallowed a bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider she swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

There was a an old lady who swallowed a cat
Imagine that she swallowed a cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider she swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

There was an old lady who swallowed a dog
She went whole hog to swallow the dog
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat, She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider she swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

I know an old lady who swallowed a cow
I don't know how she swallowed a cow
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog, She swallowed the dog to catch the cat, She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider she swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she''l die

I know an old lady who swallowed a horse
She dies of course!

Feltboard: Where Has My Little Dog Gone

Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone
Oh where, oh where can he be
With his ears cut short and his tail cut long
Oh where, oh where can he be?

FELTBOARD: 5 little Leaves

Five little leaves on the tree next door
One fell off and then there were four
Four little leaves all over the tree
One fell off and then there were three
Three little leaves where the wind blew
One fell off and then there were two
Two little leaves sitting in the sun
One fell off and then there was one
One little leaf in the tree all alone
The wind blew and blew now there are none!

FELTBOARD: Five Little Ocean Friends

Five little ocean friends on the ocean floor,
The starfish walks away and now there are four
Four little ocean friends living in the sea
The crab slides away now there are three
Three little ocean friends looking for a clue
“Glub, glub,” said the lobster now there are two
Two little ocean friends not having much fun
Off swam the sea horse now there is one
One little octopus sad and all alone
Back swims the starfish, back swims the crab,
Back swims the lobster, back swims the sea horse
And they played in the sea foam, safe in their home.

FELTBOARD: 5 Little Pumpkins

Once there were 5 orange pumpkins growing in a pumpkin patch. There was a GIANT pumpkin, a LARGE pumpkin, a MEDIUM pumpkin, a SMALL pumpkin and a TINY pumpkin. (Put them on the flannelboard one by one.)

A man came by and looked at the five pumpkins.  He picked up the giant pumpkin. "This will be a fine pumpkin to put in my store window."  he said.  (Remove the GIANT pumpkin.)

Soon a woman came by and looked at the four pumpkins still growing in the pumpkin patch. She picked up the large pumpkin.  "This will be a fine pumpkin to set on my doorstep" she said.  (Remove large)

Next a teacher came by and looked at the three pumpkins still growing in the pumpkin patch.  She chose the medium pumpkin.  "This will be a fine pumpkin  for my classroom!" she said.  (Remove medium)

Then a baker came by and looked at the two pumpkins still growing in the pumpkin patch.  He found the small pumpkin.  "This will be just fine for a pumpkin pie!" he said. (Remove small).

Finally a little boy dressed in a ghost costume stopped by the pumpkin patch.  He saw the tiny pumpkin that was left.  "This is just right to take to my Halloween party!" he said. So he took the pumpkin, painted a face on it and said "This is my best Jack-o-lantern ever!"

FELTBOARD: Mrs. Wishy-Washy

"Oh lovely mud," said the cow
and she jumped in
"Oh lovely mud," said the pig
and he rolled in it
"Oh lovely mud," said the duck
and she paddled in it
Along came Mrs. Wishy-Washy
"Just look at you!" she screamed
"In the tub you go."
In went the cow, wishy-washy, wishy -washy
In went the pig, wishy-washy, wishy-washy
In went the duck, wishy-washy, wishy-washy
"Thats better," said Mrs. Wishy Washy
and she went into the house
Away went the cow
Away went the pig
Away went the duck
"Oh, lovely mud," they said

* A very fun feltboard to do. Get the audience to sit and twist like a washing machine when the cow, pig and duck are being wishy-washy in the tub. A great companion to a messy storytime.

Five Little Books

Five little books,
Sitting on a shelf.
Look inside
And see a little elf
Four little books
All in a row
Look inside
See it start to snow
Three little books
Still on the shelf
Can you take one
And read it for yourself?
Two little books,
Left on a pile
Find one now
And read it with a smile.
One little book,
All that is there
Found itself a reader who was happy to share.

FELTBOARD: The Turnip

Once there was an old man, a very old man. He planted a turnip seed in the ground. He waited and waited and waited for the green leaves to sprout, first a little, then a lot. When the old man saw how large the leaves got he said “This is no ordinary turnip, it’s a great big, huge, enormous…..turnip.” And he grabbed the leaves and he pulled and he pulled and he pulled and he pulled.

Along came his wife and the old man said “fee, fie, fo, fout this turnip will not come out.” The old woman said “let me help” and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled. But that turnip would not come out.

Along came their granddaughter and the old woman said “fee, fie, fo, fout this turnip will not come out”. So the old woman held onto the old man and the granddaughter held onto the old woman and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled. But that turnip would not come out.

Along came a dog and the little girl said “fee, fie, fo, fout this turnip will not come out ”
So the old woman held onto the old man and the granddaughter held onto the old woman and the dog held onto the granddaughter and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled. But that turnip would not come out.

Along came a cat and the dog said “fee, fie, fo, fout this turnip will not come out ”
So the old woman held onto the old man and the granddaughter held onto the old woman and the dog held onto the granddaughter and the cat held onto the dog and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled. But that turnip would not come out.

Along came a cat and the dogsaid “fee, fie, fo, fout this turnip will not come out ”
And the mouse said “let me help”, “hahaha” laughed the cat, “what help can a little mouse be?” “You never know” said the mouse. So the old woman held onto the old man and the granddaughter held onto the old woman and the dog held onto the granddaughter and the cat held onto the dog and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled.

AND THE TURNIP CAME OUT AND IT WAS A GREAT BIG ONE TOO
