STORYTIME: Pets

What Pet to Get by Emma Dodd - A little boy talks with his mom about all the exotic pets he can get. Mom has some valid points as to why most all of them wouldn't work out. Very funny and cute, a little long though.
Me Want Pet! by Tammi Sauer-What a riot! This team effort between Sauer and Bob Shea's illustrations is a storytime hit. Caveboy want pet. Parent say no pet. Book write in caveman speak. Fun read.
Prudence Wants a Pet by Cathleen Daly- On the longer side. I may save this one until the end of this storytime session once the kids can sit through more complex stories.
My Rhinoceros by Jon Agee- Such wonderful illustrations, and a really funny book. Sometimes working with really young kids makes me sad because they are too young to understand the humor in the books I read. The parents usually get it which is fun, but I do love reading to school age kids for that reason.
Pet Shop Lullaby by Mary Ann Fraser- A story that I am not crazy about the text but love the illustrations. Luckily it lends itself well to having the kids tell the story through the pictures.
Dino Petsby Lynn Plourde- A fun book about what kind of dinosaur to choose as a pet. Great big illustrations.
Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet by Kely DiPucchio- This book is one of those books where I would skip over a bit of the text. It is a funny book so I did not want to write it off for storytime.

STORYTIME: Cats & Dogs

The Great Dog Wash by Shellie Braeuner

What is Your Dog Doing? by Marilyn Singer- Simple text accompanied by bold illustrations mixed with humor make this an excellent selection for story time.

What is Your Dog doing? by Marilyn Singer- Dog Sharing, Dog Sledding, Dog Chewing and more in this simple cute book with all different breeds of dogs.

Homer the Library Cat by Reeve Lindbergh- Not to be confused with Dewey the Library Cat ;) A kitty jumps out of his house window and tries to find somewhere to stay finally setting on the library.

Cat Secrets by Jef Czekaj- This book is amazing. The characters talk directly to the audience. It's adorable and really funny!

Dogs by Emily Gravett- A clever, humorous book with great illustrations and a fun way to look at opposites.

Tip! Snap! Yap! by Charles Fuge- Speaks right to the reader and has the audience join in the howling. This book is great fun!

One Pup's Up by Marsha Wilson Chall- A counting book for babies or 2 year olds. Toddlers may be bored by the story but it's pretty darn cute.

Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! by Susan Meyers- Great for 2 year olds with a simple rhyme scheme and a refrain the audience can say along with you.

Please, Puppy, Please by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee- Great writing and great illustrations from a puppy eye perspective. Fun refrain that the kids will enjoy saying along with he story and some moments kids will find very funny, especially if you play it up while reading.

Hondo and Fabian / Fabian Escapes by Peter McCarty - Sweetly illustrated stories about a dog and cat who are best friends.

Grumpy Cat by Britta Teckentrup

Nini Here and There by Anita Lobel - A little kitty daydreams about all the places her family may take her.

The Cat Barked? by Lydia Monks - A cat dreams about being a dog, very cute and funny.

Murphy Meets the Treadmill by Harriet Ziefert - A family dog needs to loose a few pounds.

Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes - A silly little kitty mistakes the moon on water for a giant bowl of milk.

Drat That Fat Cat! by Pat Thomson
Here Come the Big, Mean Dust Bunny! by Jan Thomas
Stretch by Doreen Cronin

Where is Tippy Toes? by Betsy Lewin- Charming with it lift the flat style of illustration. Adds come visual interest to a simple story.

A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann- Super adorable illustrations!!!! Four kittens are eagerly anticipating their first snowfall in this sweet and simple story. A real delightful read.

Cat Dreams by Ursula K. Le Guin- Really wonderful realistic painted illustrations. A lovely cat dreams about all the things he would love tot do like climb a catnip tree. Text is a great companion to the illustrations, dancing along the pages in a playful manner.

There are Cats in this Book by Viviane Scwarz- A fun interactive lift the flap book. Similar in style to Jan Thomas's "Can You Make a Scary Face." The three cats invite the reader to participate and coaxes them into turning each page and lifting each flap. (not that kids need it!)

Posey by Linda Newberry- I really love this book. The pictures are so sweet and really capture the movements and habits of cats very well. A sweet read aloud.

Fun Dog, Sun Dog by Deborah Heiligman- A little boy and his dog do some fun things on a summer day. Nice rhyming scheme, sounds a bit like "I Don't Want a Posh Dog."
